Stellantis has released details on its next-generation body-on-frame platform that’ll underpin upcoming Ram models.

STLA Frame has been designed for use by combustion-powered, hybrid, hydrogen, electric (EV), and range-extender electric vehicles (EREVs).

This includes the upcoming Ram 1500 REV and 1500 Ramcharger, which were revealed last year.

Stellantis has now confirmed how diverse a range of powertrains is supported by the platform, and confirmed unspecified Jeep models – along with the aforementioned Rams – will be among the first to be underpinned by STLA Frame.

The new platform will underpin a range of full-sized pickup trucks, SUVs and light commercial vehicles, and Stellantis says EV and EREV models will launch first with other powertrains following “in the future”.

With electric power, Stellantis says STLA Frame vehicles with electric power can offer up to 800km of range, while EREV models can offer up to 1100km of total range.

It’ll achieve these figures through the use of batteries ranging from 159 to over 200 kilowatt-hours (kWH), while Stellantis says it’s “also engineered to accept future energy storage technologies, ensuring adaptability for years to come”.

EV models support 800-volt DC fast charging at up to 350kW, while EREV models feature 400-volt DC fast charging.

STLA Frame vehicles will also come with bi-directional charging capability, providing vehicle-to-vehicle, vehicle-to-grid and vehicle-to-home charging.

Stellantis promises a maximum towing capacity of 6350kg and payload of 1224kg, as well as a wading depth of 610mm; air suspension will be available, depending on the model.

Front and electric motors will produce up to 250kW, good for 0-60mph (0-96km/h) times of as little as 4.4 seconds.

EREV models will feature a battery, front and rear electric motors, an onboard generator, and a combustion engine that powers this instead of sending power directly to the wheels.

In the Ram 1500 Ramcharger, this is the venerable 3.6-litre Pentastar V6. It powers a 130kW onboard generator that in turn powers 250kW front and 238kW rear electric motors for total system outputs of 487kW and 834Nm, while there’s a 92kWh battery pack.

The Ram 1500 REV has already been confirmed to offer even larger 168kWh or 229kWh batteries, with dual 250kW electric motors for total system outputs of 488kW and 841Nm.

Both the REV and Ramcharger have claimed towing capacity of up to 6350kg and payload figures of between 1190kg and 1225kg.

While Stellantis hasn’t confirmed what other vehicles will use the STLA Frame platform, it has provided a range of dimensions.

It appears likely STLA Frame could be used not only for future Ram pickups, but also replacements for the current Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer SUVs.

After announcing the STLA Small, STLA Medium, STLA Large and STLA Frame platforms in 2021, Stellantis has released more information on these in recent months.

It’s aiming for 100 per cent of the passenger cars it sells in Europe to be electric-only by 2030, and 50 per cent of its passenger cars and light-duty trucks in the US by the same time.
